Then There's Food

We have managed to eat while we're here, and we have eaten well. All parts of Ireland are so close to the sea that there is lots of fresh fish available and all that we have had has been great! The seafood chowder we had in western Ireland is still our favorite meal so far. We have actually eaten most meals the last couple of days in our hotel and have found lots of fresh vegetables. There was something on the menu called "rocket" and when we asked what it was we were told it was salad.  Dr. It was actually arugula, which is a bitter green. They served it on top of our pizza. We thought we were eating sweet potatoes but it was actually carrots and turnips which had been pureed together. We have also found that things such as desserts are not nearly as sweet as we would make them. Perhaps that's partly why we don't see overweight people! We think that food prices are pretty high, even outside of the hotel restaurant. Fortunately some great meals have been included with the conference registration.
My (Paige's) fabulous breakfast...the next day I doubled the mushroom portion.
I have reverted back to my coffee only breakfast though; just can't handle that much food before noon!

Fabulous Latte's and I (Paige) especially like the Bewley's Mint Tea
and "Forest Fruits" juice in the morning.

Paige's meat and  "potato fest" conference lunch

Susan's salad bar lunch
(one of the breads with hummus was for  Paige).

Still our favorite so far: seafood chowder at Gus O'Connor's Pub.

Paige's tasty asian noodle, vegetable, and chicken dinner.

Susan's plaice (fish) with fresh spinach and a butter caper sauce.

Wow! That is a TON of food! I am not sure if I could handle all that before noon either. What are the prices like compared to ours? You mentioned they are pricey.

Dinners in the hotel are about $20 and up. Cokes in machines are about $3. We have never been able to eat everything!

Hi Dr. Santoli and Dr. Vitulli,

Wow! Looking at all of that food is making me hungry; it looks great! I'm not usually very adventurous when it comes to food, but I think I would have to make exceptions if I ever found myself outside of the country. I would be too curious as to what everything tastes like! It is interesting to see the differences in American and Irish breakfast. Was the "rocket" good? What is the biggest difference between Ireland and America that y'all have noticed so far? These blog posts are really interesting to read, and they are making me want to travel to Ireland one day. I hope y'all are having a fabulous time in Ireland!

The rocket was good- a bit bitter. We have an earlier section on things we have found different, including food. Iit is a wonderful country. The people are so friendly and helpful. We have tried to represent the US well!

Hi Dr. Santoli and Dr. Vitulli,

The food looks amazing! I find it quite funny that you mistaken carrots for sweet potatoes. Their food mixtures and choices are very different. But like I said it looks amazing! I do not like trying new things, but I think I would try the seafood chowder! It looks like the both of you are having a great time! Enjoy yourself!

I would have to agree...that is a ton of fun! I would gain so much weight there, but I am a pretty picky eater so maybe I wouldn't. I am a big coffee drinker though, so I know I would enjoy that. I don't eat seafood at all, but the seafood chowder does look really good!

I've heard that many places don't have as sweet of desserts as we do here, so maybe that is why we are all so overweight here and they aren''t...hmm.

Of course it would be me that posts about food. I just want to say that the food looks delicious and it makes me even more jealous that I could not go! I mean when you go to different places you definitely have to eat the food! Those prices were high, but I mean as long as they give enough food I guess that I would be cool with it!

Tyler! Why am I not surprised that the food caught your eye!! One other thing we didn't add is that portions were just huge everywhere. We could rarely eat everything and felt wasteful leaving things.

Hi Dr. Santoli & Dr. Vitulli

The food looks amazing. I find it funny that you thought carrots were sweet potatoes. I love seafood , so I know I'd have to try the clam chowder. They have a weird way of mixing foods together, I'm not sure if my stomach could handle all of that. The portions they serve are HUGE! Do they have to-go boxes for leftovers?

Okay, the food looks lovely. I am not sure I could eat the breakfast offerings that early in the morning either!

I would have a huge caffeine headache with sodas being $3! My husband would probably get his wish for me to stop drinking soda!

Over all the food looks delicious. I would have thought there would be more potato choices, but that is probably a stereotypical idea.

Gina,
There were actually multiple potato choices with most meals - especially later in the week. For one meal I think I ate Shepard's Pie (mashed potatoes on top), a side of mashed potatoes, and "chips" (thick cut french fries to us in the US). Another day at the conference lunch I had a meal that rivals my Thanksgiving dinner. Needless to say, a diet is in my future.

The "fabulous breakfast" is identical to what I had at the Thistlewaite Hotel in London, England on July 5, 2011. It is very hearty but heavy to eat every day.

Wow! That is a TON of food! I am not sure if I could handle all that before noon either. I believe 20.00 is alot but I guess if they do give you alot of food it should be fair enough. I am a kind of person that likes to try different things but when it comes to alot of vegetables then I become picky. I am not a big vegetable eater. Unless it is raw or in a salad. However I would have to try the Shepards Pie it is my favorite. And I love when people cook fresh french fries out of potatoes instead of frozen ones. They are always better that way. I wont to go so bad now to try the different foods cause they looks so delicious. I wont have to worry about the sweets not being sweet enough becuase I am not a big sweet eater. I am a big meat and friut person. How were the friuts over there. Did you try any.

The presentation of the food is definitely different than how the United States typically presents food. The seafood chowder looked very yummy though! I'm curious to know what is in "Forest Fruits" juice.

Wow! That is a lot of food! But I guess it should be at those prices, lol! I think the breakfast plate seems more like lunch or dinner food, but since I don't eat breakfast anyway, I guess it wouldn't really matter to me. I would love to travel to Ireland someday, especially after reading this blog! Thanks for all the interesting info!

All these dishes look delicious! I am surprised by their portions. They seem pretty big, which is nice. I believe that tasting food when you travel is part of the whole experience. It's interesting to see what locals eat. When I lived in Spain a friend and I went out to lunch with some Spaniards we had met. They took us to a tapas restaurant and ordered all the local choices. It was such an interesting and fun experience. Glad you had the same in Ireland!

Hi Dr. Vitulli and Ms. Santoli. One of my favorite parts of a vacation is trying new, different foods. The meals pictured here look great, tasty and attractive. I think chefs are artists in their own way, they just create delicious art that lasts only if you take a picture of it. The photo of the plaice with spinach really has me wanting some! Hi Dr. Vitulli and Ms. Santoli,

Wow! The food looks really awesome! Hopefully it tasted just as good as it looked! I am not big on trying new foods, so I would be kind of timid when it came to trying some of that. But I would have to say, I think I would try it none the less. You stated that the desserts are not as sweet as ours, so do they season their foods as much as we do here? I know I use a lot of seasoning, and probably use more salt that what I should. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
